FOUR

2024
Gallery 2, FACT Liverpool, 88 Wood Street, L1 4DQ
FOUR (2024) is an immersive installation and audio work presented in the first floor gallery. The work explores the concept of sonic biographies, examining how sound and listening function as collective experiences that form and sustain personal connections. Developed through workshops at HMP Buckley Hall in Rochdale, the project involved imprisoned men and their families listening to music and sounds significant to their lives, sharing the memories and relationships carried through those sonic moments.

The resulting audio work incorporates sounds and rhythms recorded by participants and is presented within a gallery space redesigned in response to time spent in the prison’s visitor centre. FOUR is an outcome of Resolution, a multi-year arts and research project exploring how art can influence public attitudes and decision-making within the justice system. The project was developed in collaboration with imprisoned men at HMP Buckley Hall and their families, with NOVUS, and produced by FACT Liverpool as part of Resolution, led by FACT in collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University and funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
