Version
2021CCS Wysing Arts Centre. Fox Road, Bourn, Campbridge, CB23 2TX
Version is a series of works developed for the first onsite exhibition at Wysing Arts Centre in 2021, installed in three parts across the site. Drawing on the idea of the version in vocal reggae, the exhibition brings together sound and sculpture to extend a practice of sonic biography, a generative method of sound exploration developed over time. Occupying multiple spaces, the works reflect on Jamaican heritage from the position of distance and inherited memory. A rendition of the traditional folk song Linstead Market, sung by Elaine Mitchener, plays intermittently on arrival, evoking songs held through childhood and remembrance. In the main gallery, a sound composition capturing the cooking of ackee and saltfish is presented alongside sculptural elements, exploring the intertwined roles of sound, food, and biography. The final work transforms the Amphis sculpture in the Wysing grounds into an homage to dub, the music genre that originated on the island.
The three sound works are accompanied by a video with a response by Taylor Le Melle, presented as a textual version of the compositions. These translations function as experiments in sound translation, offering alternative ways for sonic elements to be shared and accessed. Developed in partnership with curator Hannah Wallis, this approach forms part of a wider exploration into how sound-based works can be made more accessible for D/deaf audiences. The exhibition was supported by Arts Council England, DASH, The Future Curators’ Programme, the Henry Moore Foundation, and The Elephant Trust, with special thanks to Martha Todd of Studio1Ceramics.
